Mum, You Deserve a Youthful Healthy Smile.

When it comes to health, most mums are fantastic at caring for others but often put themselves last.

This Mother’s Day the dentists and staff at Dental Care Professionals want to help all our beautiful, busy and selfless mums have a fantastic day. Confident to smile and enjoy their special day with some quick tips to help you with your oral health.

You might not know, but women have unique oral health concerns. Changing hormone levels during your menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause can raise your risk of problems in your mouth, teeth, or gums. Health issues such as diabetes can also affect your oral health.

Protecting your natural teeth for as long as you can is a great priority to have with your oral health and general wellbeing. That starts with having a great routine and good dental habits.

Good Dental Habits for a Youthful Healthy Smile

1. Brush your teeth daily and with proper care

We all appreciate that time is precious, but even if you are a busy mum, no matter what your schedule, finding time to properly brush your teeth is vital for good oral health. A regular daily oral hygiene routine, involving brushing twice daily is an absolute must for all time poor mums!

2. Floss after meals to remove that kale!

Too often women come to us apologising that they simply haven’t had time to floss regularly. If there is one thing you can do to improve your oral health, it is to introduce flossing into your daily routine. Flossing helps to get rid of food residue and other detrimental substances stuck between the teeth that brushing alone simple can’t do. It keeps your gums healthy and helps you avoid those embarrassing moments when that bit of spinach or kale gets left behind!

3. Eating for a youthful healthy smile

Every mum knows that it’s important to pay attention to the food you eat. Whether it is to avoid food allergy reactions, for keeping a trim figure or for big global causes – like non-GMO, sourced locally, animal rights, the environment and carbon footprint reasons.

But did you know that the food that you choose can affect the health of your teeth and gums?!

When your diet is low in the nutrients your body needs, your mouth can have a more difficult time resisting infection. So, choosing foods such as nuts, fruits (such as apples), cheese, chicken and vegetables that are teeth friendly can make a big difference.

4. Drink plenty of H20 to refresh and cleanse your mouth

Water is fantastic for your overall health, and oral health too! Drinking tap water with fluoride is one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to help prevent tooth decay. By choosing water and regularly sipping it during the day, you are making a great choice for your pearly whites. Rinsing away acids created when you eat food or chew gum.

Healthy mum’s know that drinking 8 glasses of water a day is important for your mind and body. Now you know it’s also great for a youthful healthy smile.

Regaining Your Youthful Healthy Smile

Happily every mum is different. That also means that her smile, teeth and oral health needs are different too.

Your life’s journey may have had a few bumps in the road which meant that your natural teeth need a little more help than good dental habits can give you. When that’s the case, a visit to the dentist can give you choices about regaining your youthful healthy smile.

5. Visit your dentist for more help with your smile

You make time for your hair appointments and physical health with your doctor, so don’t skip the health of your smile.

Stains and discolouration can be corrected. Gaps and missing teeth can be made even. There are options for dental rejuvenation that could be right for you that you don’t even know about. And the only way to find out for sure is to visit a dentist.

Making it a habit to visit your dentist regularly for the usual full oral check-up and teeth cleaning is a great example to set for your daughter. One day she will be a mum too!

Because women are at higher risk of gum disease during pregnancy, and gum problems and bone loss may happen more quickly in women after menopause those regular visits to the dentist are all important.

6. Smile for the camera mum!

Did you know that smiling more often can improve your health and help you live longer?

Smiling boosts your mood, even when you are feeling down. Your smile provides stress relief for both you and others around you; and may be beneficial for people struggling with anxiety and depression. Smiling and laughing helps lower your blood pressure, which is good news for your heart health too.

So, flash your pearly whites more often mum and enjoy the benefits all-round!
