White Fillings are a popular alternative to amalgam fillings not only because they aren’t detectable, but because usually they can be placed in a single dentist visit.
Composite resin is used as the tooth coloured filling material. The resin material is coloured to match to your natural tooth shade and used for a variety of different sized fillings as well for veneers and other cosmetic procedures like tooth bonding to change the shape of teeth.
In addition to restoring teeth that are fractured or have decayed, tooth coloured fillings may also be used cosmetically to change the size, colour and shape of teeth. This quality is particularly useful in closing gaps between teeth; repairing chipped teeth and making teeth appear to be more straight or even.
One of the main advantages of composite resin for white fillings is that they are bonded to the tooth surface, meaning the joins are sealed to help prevent further decay of the surrounding tooth structure.
Advantages and Disadvantages of
Tooth Coloured Fillings
Advantages
They closely match natural tooth colour and appearance.
They bond to tooth structure chemically and thus do not require the placement of slots, grooves or pins in healthy tooth structure to mechanically retain them.
The bonding of white fillings to the tooth has been measured (in some cases) to restore 85% – 95% of the original strength of the tooth.
The resin sets to be completely hardened in seconds (instead of days required by some other materials).
White fillings may be used in some cases on front teeth without compromising aesthetics.
If damaged, they can be repaired.
Disadvantages
Frequent and/or prolonged exposure to dark liquids (such as coffee, tea or red wine) and foods with rich dyes (like curries, etc.) may stain them.

Inlays & Onlays
Where there is minor damage to tooth enamel, inlays and onlays are often recommended as an alternative to fillings or a crown because they preserve a great deal of the natural tooth.

Natural Fillings
